US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is building a financial advantage over Republican candidate Donald Trump in the final stretch of the race to the White House.
Harris’ campaign spent $174 million in August, nearly three times more than her opponent Donald Trump, primarily on advertising.
Vice President Kamala Harris announced to the Federal Election Commission on September 20th that her campaign spent $174 million last month. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump’s campaign spent $61 million in the same period.
The two US presidential candidates are entering the final stage of the race to the White House, considered extremely tense. Harris became the Democratic nominee in July, replacing President Joe Biden, and quickly attracted large donations.
The financial advantage helps her ads reach a wider audience on television, but it doesn’t mean this strategy will ensure victory for the US Vice President. Polls in many areas, including battleground states, show the two candidates are neck-and-neck in terms of support.
In the 2016 presidential election, Trump defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton despite raising less money.
Trump and Harris both said that most of their spending was on advertising, while total spending on campaign events, travel, and campaign staff salaries was a smaller proportion.
In the report submitted to the Federal Election Commission, Harris’ campaign reported raising $190 million in August. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign received $45 million.
As of the end of August, the Harris campaign had $235 million, higher than at the beginning of the month. The Trump campaign had $135 million, down about $17 million from the beginning of the month.
