Vice President Kamala Harris is brat.

Supporters of Harris have affectionately dubbed her with the nickname “Brat,” which has gained popularity on social media through lime green highlighted memes and clips of her dancing and speeches.

This meme-centric approach gained traction after Charli XCX expressed her support for Harris, leading to a viral video of Harris laughing set to one of Charli XCX’s songs.

The singer herself later endorsed Harris with the statement “Kamala IS brat,” prompting a rebranding of President Biden’s campaign account to “kamala hq” with a lime green image.

What is ‘brat’?

Charli XCX’s upcoming album “Brat,” set to be released in the summer of 2024, has quickly become a hit in nightclubs. The album focuses on the female perspective and explores how younger women envision their lives.

Kamala Harris may not be commonly associated with the term “brat,” however, a recent post by XCX on social media described the vice president as such. This endorsement from a British pop star has garnered significant attention from Harris’s supporters online, with the candidate’s campaign embracing the Brat aesthetic on social-media platforms and the internet flooded with Brat-soundtracked edited videos of Harris.

White House candidates often attempt to connect with younger voters by using popular internet trends, such as memes. The abundance of Brat’s chartreuse-colored memes has sparked a significant grassroots support for Harris, as noted by Charlie Warzel. Various Brat-Harris remixes can be found across platforms like X, Instagram, and TikTok, with the video of her discussing falling out of a coconut tree circulating widely.

Will Harris beat Trump?

The Harris campaign has also adopted the “brat” color. The distinct chartreuse or lime green shade has been circulated on the campaign’s social media platforms.

She mentioned that it could lean towards luxury or trashy, giving examples like a pack of cigarettes, a Bic lighter, and a strappy white top without a bra, implying that those are all that is necessary.

Harris’s campaign has embraced this theme strongly after she emerged as the likely Democratic nominee, despite the stereotype of a cigarette-smoking, party-girl. Alongside the coconut emoji, it has swiftly become an informal symbol of backing for her presidential campaign.

An organization led by Generation Z members informed The Hill that “brat” is considered as “A symbol; a celebration of genuineness and self-assurance” by the voters of the future.

Following Kamala Harris’ declaration of her presidential candidacy, she managed to secure an unprecedented $81 million in donations within a single day. However, her most influential endorsement may have originated from a solitary tweet with significant cultural impact.

The majority of Democrats showed their support for the vice-president through tweets and TV interviews, with an unexpected voice, British pop singer Charli XCX, also expressing her opinion by tweeting, “kamala IS brat.”

That’s high praise from the musician, who released her album, also titled Brat, last month. Brat is not just a name, but a lifestyle, one inspired by noughties excess and rave culture.
