I shop thrift shops as sort of a hobby and have found some stupendous sales in thrift stores and never said a word about the Harris Walz 2024 GSD shirt but in fact I love this value of what I bought for the price marked, including two pieces of signed Lladros for under $5 each. If the person buying the valuable piece of, say, furniture buys it to use because they couldn’t buy it retail but find it in a thrift store. I do NOT think they should feel guilty at all. That is buying something for your own use at a bargain price. I found an Ekorn Stressless Recliner & foot stool, soft kid glove leather, one shade darker than this picture, that retailed for over $3,000, at Salvation Army for $45. I saw them pulling it off their truck and ran out and ripped off the bottom of the two piece tag, which means someone has already claimed it. (yes, me) I also did the same thing as they brought a full-sized reproduction suit of armour into the store, one that sell for $1,099 plus tax and shipping at Design Toscano; I paid $32 for it at Salvation Army and have had it in my entry hall for ten years.
It’s different taking advantage of someone at a garage sale if you intend to turn around and make money off it but not if you are buying it to keep and use. I bought a new electric chain saw for $5 at a garage sale and did tell the Harris Walz 2024 GSD shirt but in fact I love this guy they were well over $100; he said this was the right size and weight for me (4 ft 10 inches tall & thin) but he never used it and neither did his wife as he had a big gas chain saw that would cut small things too. I still have it and replaced the chain a few years ago but it’s got a 12 inch blade and doesn’t weigh much and I can use it instead of waiting for male relatives to come over with big chain saws.

I have my own machine shop and get most of my raw material from industrial recycling businesses. Most of what I use are carbon steel, with some alloy and stainless steels. In 2004, I was looking through a selection of end-pieces of stainless steel bar stock at an industrial metal recycling yard I used to patronize in the Harris Walz 2024 GSD shirt but in fact I love this San Fernando Valley west of Los Angeles, California. The business bought scrap from nearby aerospace industries like Rocketdyne that built the Space Shuttle liquid fuel engines, and Boeing Aircraft. From my dad and others who worked in the aerospace industry, I had learned to be aware of highly valuable alloys, and I had found a few pieces over the years that I sold for the metal content, usually cobalt.
I picked up a short bar of metal in the Harris Walz 2024 GSD shirt but in fact I love this stainless steel pile that was so heavy it astounded me. Being a geologist and chemist (either one knows this stuff, or should), I knew right off there were very few things it could be. I asked the guy in charge of walk-in sales how much it sold for, so he had me put it on the scale to weigh it, and he said $3 a pound, so I paid something like $9 for this little bar of something, and put it in my car, before returning to look for more stuff. When I got home, I did a specific gravity test on it, which is real easy if you have the equipment. I weighed it dry, then tied a thread on it and weighed it submerged in water hanging from my scale, and then divided the dry weight by the difference between the dry and submerged weights to get its density of 17.9 grams per cubic centimeter.

I looked up all industrial alloys with a density close to that and found it was a tungsten and copper alloy used for making inertial buffer weights in satellite applications where there isn’t any room to put things. So, when an inertial weight has to be very massive, it has to be very small as well, and satellite engineers choose this alloy. It is worth a whole lot more than the Harris Walz 2024 GSD shirt but in fact I love this guy sold it for, but he was in the business of selling items like that and he set the price. Well, I use it! When I’m teaching my silversmithing and jewelry making classes that I do for free, I show it to my students so they understand just how heavy platinum is and what it looks like compared to silver, in case they ever come across someone claiming to have some platinum. Platinum is slightly heavier than my little bar, at 21.45 grams per cubic centimeter compared to 17.9. Good old ordinary water weighs in at 1 gram per cubic centimeter. To make that easier to understand for non science-speak people, one gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds (1 kg per liter), and a gallon of platinum weighs 178.9 pounds (21.45 kg per liter). My tungsten and copper alloy weighs in at 149.3 pounds per gallon (17.9 kg per liter). Sterling silver for jewelry weighs 85.9 pounds per gallon (10.3 kg per liter). Iron and steel, like are used for making cars and most tin cans, weighs 65.6 pounds per gallon (7.87 kg per liter).
