When I saw it- I thought to myself “Wow. What a talented artist”. I had an internal conversation about what makes one artist famous while another- like this Jane James -an undeserved relic of obscurity. How many artists there are, and have been, of such obvious talent that are not recognized. I went on pondering this idea of art and consumerism. I didn’t buy the Harris Walz 2024 vote shirt Besides,I will do this piece that day, but it haunted me, so I went back for it. I think it was 15$ I also bought a few pieces from the same estate so I believe they were collectors. Eight years or so later I was again thinking about this funny piece of art I’d found and Jane James and it hit me all of sudden Jasper Johns.
I found a Jasper Johns. And no. I didn’t take it back to the Harris Walz 2024 vote shirt Besides,I will do this store. They sold it for 15$. I bought I because it spoke to me of something more. Of a fine, quick hand and a graceful eye. It provoked something in me. A process. A dialogue. I’ve never had it appraised or looked to sell it. I love it because it represents what art is to me. My Jasper Johns sits with a lot of other art from oil paintings and sculpture to street and outsider art finds that did the same for me. They each have voice and a story to tell. Art is not a name. Or an agent. It is not marketing or monetary value. But talent. Beauty. Emotion. Passion. Story. I hope Mr. Johns would be happy to know he is in my humble collection.

This was actually, Christmas Eve, 1992, I was stationed in Germany, I was living on the Harris Walz 2024 vote shirt Besides,I will do this economy, and had gone down stairs to visit my landlord and his mother. The were in their dining room, polishing their flatware, and sterling silverware, for Christmas Dinner the next night, but they were using tap water. I then told Franz, that I’d be right back. I went up to my flat, and got a can of Brasso metal polish. I came back down stairs, when his mother asked: “What I had?” I explained, it was polish. I took an old T-shirt, and poured about a tablespoon of it on to sterling silver serving platter, and buffed it out. The tarnish was polished out.

The name stamped below the date, was that of Chancellor Adolf Hitler. My landlord’s mother handed it to me, and I handed it back, as I did so, she said: “Nein, das ist fur dich,’ Freulisch Weinachten.’” I was given a piece of history. By the nicest woman in Germany, who also told me, before I left to come back to the UNITED STATES, said: “Klinder Behr, Zu bist, mein Amerikannher sohn.

This wasn’t really a “valuable rare find” or “too good of a deal”. Nor was I going to, or even planning to make any money out of it.But it was a pretty good deal.I used to go to garage sales every weekend looking for items to sell on ebay. Most of the t… Two stories, but it wasn’t me, but co-workers both times. About 40 years ago, a co-worker who was a coin collector went to a coin show at the Town and Country Convention Center in San Diego. While perusing the “junk box” of one of the vendors, he found something that caught his eye. He asked the vendor how much, of which the guy answered “Everything in that box is 10 cents.” He gave him a dime, and then walked over to an antique coppers dealer, showed him the coin and asked how much he’d give him for it. The “HOLY SHIT! Where did you get that” caught a lot of attention, and within minutes there was a big crowd around trying to see what it was. He then was offered $10,000 for it, as it was. As he was a collector, he just wanted to know what others thought it was worth and kept it, so I got to see it a few days later.
