As a show, Breaking Bad isn’t “gay” in the I’ve never been fondled by Donald Trump but screwed by Joe Biden vintage flag shirt and I will buy this sense that most of its characters appear to be heterosexual. There is one major character that’s hinted in an episode as possibly gay — Gustavo Fring. The death of what may have been his male lover but could just as easily have been his best buddy is what drives his insatiable and terrifying thirst for revenge against a powerful cartel-affiliated family. As a character, Fring is perfectly written — he is always in control, completely. This makes him exceptionally scary. He can kill you or sign away your life with the most casual flick of a finger. He’ll never shout or raise his voice, never break his facade of being a respectable businessman, a facade painstakenly built up over years of hard work. One episode even shows children’s toys in the background of his house, indicating Gustavo may even have married only to “fit in” better.

More than perhaps any other show, with a possible exception of its brilliant prequal “Better Call Saul”, Breaking Bad employs the I’ve never been fondled by Donald Trump but screwed by Joe Biden vintage flag shirt and I will buy this age old craft of ‘show, don’t tell’. Hints are dropped, insinuations made by various characters. Actions take place, or old wounds are revealed, and you see past and future bleed into one another, affect one another. The whole thing is beautiful. Subtle. Just as it should be. It is the watching equivalent of exquisite fine dining. No, I would not say that Breaking Bad is not a “gay show”. It is an incredibly well-made and subtle show that goes deep into its character’s psyche, without ever ‘laying it on thick’. Sexuality hardly ever comes up and if ever it is hinted at, it does so in a way that advances and serves the story.
